Rarely do I get to fish what I call "clear freshwater" around Houston. So I always welcome the opportunity to go fish the Lampasas River at Parrie Haynes Ranch near Killeen. Although usually part of work (TPWD), I always make the time after everyone leaves.
This time, I managed to take about 15 bass and several sunfish in 3 hours on the fly rod. None were all that big, but I did manage a few 3 pounders and on the other end a four inch bass.
At first I couldn't get anything other than sunfish on the woolys' save a few extremely small bass. However, I did have a few Dorado streamers hanging for decoration in truck. Just for fun, I put a 4.5 incher on tippet and sight casted towards a fallen tree. Next thing I know the surface erupts and one of the 3 pounders comes completely out of the water.
The rest is just time, casts, strips, and more bass.
I knew bass hit large baits but this was the first time I tried a fly this size for bass.
A fun lesson and a peaceful day.
